Regensburg low-emission zone: map and entry rules

Alternative names: Rezno

Active zoneVerified

You need a green emissions sticker to drive in the Regensburg low-emission zone unless your vehicle is exempt. This also applies to foreign-registered vehicles.

Zone in force since 2018-01-15

If you are visiting Regensburg Cathedral or the surrounding old town, check your parking and approach route in advance. Both the destination and the streets you use matter: driving straight to a hotel or car park may still take you into the zone.

You can park outside the zone and continue by bus. Two options below are P+R Jahnstadion in the south and P+R West near Kuglerplatz. Within the old town, also observe pedestrian areas and other local access restrictions.

Zone map and boundaries

Overview map showing the boundary of the Regensburg low-emission zone

Overview based on German Environment Agency (UBA) boundary data. Street-level exemptions are not shown; consult the official local guidance.

Regensburg’s zone covers the old town south of the Danube, between the river and the Alleengürtel park belt. It runs roughly from Jakobstor to Ostentor.

Areas covered

Stadtamhof, on the north bank of the Danube, is outside this zone. A journey to a hotel or car park in the old town may still cross the boundary.

Through routes and roads outside the zone

The A3 and A93 run outside the zone. You do not need a sticker simply to travel along either motorway.

Which vehicles do the rules apply to?

We check your registration documents to see whether your vehicle qualifies for a green sticker. Your vehicle must also meet any local entry requirements.

Local rules and exemptions

A green German emissions sticker (Umweltplakette) is required to enter the Regensburg low-emission zone unless your vehicle is exempt. The requirement also applies to vehicles registered outside Germany.

Attach the sticker clearly to the inside of the windscreen. It must show your vehicle’s current registration number. Vehicle documents and an order confirmation do not replace the physical sticker. The same valid green sticker is accepted in every German low-emission zone.

Exemptions

National exemptions include motorcycles and other two- or three-wheeled motor vehicles, certain working and emergency vehicles, and qualifying historic vehicles. The law also provides exemptions for transporting people with specified disabilities, subject to the required evidence.

Vehicles displaying electric-vehicle identification recognised under section 11 of the German Vehicle Registration Regulation (FZV) are also exempt. For a foreign-registered vehicle, this may be an equivalent foreign marking or a blue German E sticker. Electric or hybrid propulsion alone does not qualify without the required identification.

The full national exemptions are listed in Annex 3 to the 35th BImSchV. You can apply to the local authority for an individual exemption in qualifying circumstances. Obtain any required permit before travelling; submitting an application does not authorise entry.

When the rules apply

All year, 24 hours a day, including weekends and public holidays.

Penalties

The German penalty schedule sets a standard fine of €100 for a low-emission-zone offence. Administrative fees and expenses may be added. Other traffic offences are assessed separately.

Practical travel tips

Check the car park approach

Look up both the car park address and your route. You need the sticker as soon as you enter the zone, even if you are only making a short stop or driving straight to park.

Travelling by motorhome?

P+R West has designated motorhome spaces. The operator lists a maximum stay of three days, with payment required for each day. Check current conditions and availability before arriving.

A sticker is not a pedestrian-zone permit

The green sticker addresses emissions requirements. Other access controls still apply. If you are staying in the old town, confirm how to reach your accommodation and where you can unload luggage.

P+R Jahnstadion Regensburg

The stadium car park at Franz-Josef-Strauß-Allee 22 is south of the centre, outside the zone, with onward bus services. Normal P+R operation is restricted on SSV Jahn home-match days. Check the fixture date, opening hours and suitable parking ticket before arriving.

P+R West

This car park near Kuglerplatz is west of the old town, outside the zone. Buses run towards the centre from Margaretenau / Krankenhaus Barmherzige Brüder. Part of the site has designated motorhome spaces. Check the conditions of your chosen P+R ticket and any bus-route changes.

Frequently asked questions

Do foreign-registered vehicles need a sticker?

Yes. Vehicles registered outside Germany are covered by the same sticker requirement. Unless your vehicle qualifies for an exemption, attach a valid green sticker to the windscreen before entering the zone.

Where does the zone apply?

Regensburg’s zone covers the old town south of the Danube, between the river and the Alleengürtel park belt. It runs roughly from Jakobstor to Ostentor. Stadtamhof, on the north bank of the Danube, is outside this zone. A journey to a hotel or car park in the old town may still cross the boundary.

Is Stadtamhof inside the zone?

No. The official map places Stadtamhof, north of the main branch of the Danube, outside this zone. Check that your route does not cross the old town south of the river.

Do I need a sticker on the A3 or A93?

No, if you remain on the motorways. Both run outside Regensburg’s zone. Leaving for the old town may bring you into it.

Can a Euro 4 diesel enter Regensburg?

Yes, with a valid green sticker. Regensburg does not have an additional area-wide diesel ban like Stuttgart or Munich.

Do the rules apply at weekends and for a short visit?

Yes. The zone operates around the clock, all year, including nights, weekends and public holidays. A short stay or a direct trip to a hotel does not itself create a general exemption.
