German emissions sticker: frequently asked questions

The Umweltplakette is Germany’s emissions sticker. The green sticker identifies emissions group 4. It is displayed inside the windscreen when driving in a low-emission zone that requires it.

Yes. The requirement applies to foreign-registered vehicles too, unless a relevant exemption applies. Check the rules for your vehicle and destination before travelling.

The sticker is required for entry into designated low-emission zones, not simply for crossing the German border. Check your destination and route on our low-emission zone map.

No. Some places have additional local restrictions, including restrictions on certain diesel vehicles. A sticker does not override those rules. Consult the relevant city’s official information.

A clear photo or scan of your vehicle registration certificate. Please include both sides and all relevant pages. The registration number, VIN and the details needed to check your vehicle’s emissions class must be readable. A Certificate of Conformity (COC) alone is not enough to get your sticker issued.

We will contact you if we need anything else. We cannot get your sticker issued until we have all the required details in a readable format.

The sticker has no fixed expiry date. It must remain legible and show the vehicle’s current registration number. Order a replacement if the registration number changes or the sticker is damaged.

Yes. The sticker is linked to your vehicle, rather than a particular city. Additional local restrictions and exemptions still need to be checked.

Affix the sticker to the inside of the windscreen so it and the printed registration number can be clearly seen from outside. Follow the fitting instructions supplied with your sticker.

Yes. We check your registration documents, have your sticker issued by an authorised provider in Germany and send it using the delivery method you chose at checkout.
